CAMINO CRIKVENICA VINODOL CROATIA

A path between the sea and the hinterland, silence and encounters

The area of Crikvenica and Vinodol has always been a meeting point – between the sea and the hinterland, travellers and hosts, trade, culture and spirituality. For centuries, routes connecting the coast with the inland have passed here, and today the Camino Crikvenica Vinodol continues this tradition of movement, encounters and personal discovery.

Welcome to a unique Camino route that connects the sea, karst landscapes and green hinterland into an unforgettable pilgrimage and personal journey.

The Camino Crikvenica Vinodol is part of the Croatian and European Camino network, connected to the paths leading to Santiago. The 100-km-long route is fully marked with the distinctive blue and yellow Camino waymarks and can be completed in five days.

The route begins beneath Nehaj fortress in Senj, which is part of the Camino Lika, and leads to Novi Vinodolski – a historic town with a rich cultural heritage, where the Vinodol Law Code was adopted in 1288. In Krmpote, we come across the first church of St James on this route – a quiet place for a short rest and a symbolic reminder that the Camino is never just a physical journey. Continuing through the picturesque Vinodol area, the birthplace of the renowned miniaturist Juraj Julije Klović, walkers pass through a landscape where history, tradition and life shaped by the sea and karst have been intertwined for centuries. The route then leads on towards the Crikvenica Riviera, known as an oasis of health. Coastal promenades, hidden coves, the scent of salt and the sound of waves accompany walkers past locations that invite you to stop for a while – not because you have to, but because the moment calls for it.

The end of the route is in Jadranovo, beside the second church of St James – the site where the Camino Crikvenica Vinodol takes on its deepest meaning. It is no coincidence that the present-day Jadranovo was once called Sveti Jakov (St James). Just as Santiago de Compostela carries in its name the memory of the apostle towards whom pilgrims have been travelling for centuries, so too does this small place on the Kvarner coast preserve the same calling in its identity and memory.

Arriving in Jadranovo, walkers do not just reach the end of the route: they find themselves in a place that has always been associated with Saint James, the patron saint of travellers, pilgrims and all those who seek direction. That is why the last steps of the Camino carry special meaning here: after kilometres of sea, stone, silence and encounters, the journey ends in a place whose name bears witness to the fact that pilgrimage has always belonged to this area.

According to legend, after the martyrdom of the Apostle James, his disciples carried his body by boat to the coast of Galicia, where his tomb was rediscovered centuries later, illuminated by the light of the stars – hence the name Compostela, meaning ‘field of stars’. Since then, Saint James has become a symbol of journeying, of seeking and of arrival. In Jadranovo, there is a very similar tradition: on St James’ Day, 25 July, the statue of the saint is brought by boat to the waterfront, where the faithful welcome it and accompany it in procession to the church dedicated to him.

That is why the end of the Camino route in Jadranovo, a place once known as St James, is especially symbolic. Just as pilgrims have travelled to Santiago for centuries in search of the tomb of St James, so too does this route end in a place that preserves his name in its identity – a reminder that every Camino, regardless of distance, leads to the same feeling: an arrival that changes a person.

Prepare in advance by obtaining your pilgrim passport via the QR code (Where to buy a pilgrim passport).
