Pauline cake

To mark the 600th anniversary of Crikvenica and to evoke the activities of the Pauline monks in the local monastery, the Crikvenica Tourist Board has launched a competition to create a new Pauline cake. The Pauline monks played an important role in almost all aspects of life of people in Crikvenica and the surrounding villages in this area until their order was abolished in 1786. Because of their white habits, people used to call them the "white friars". There is an interesting local story, which says that Juraj Julije Klović, the most prominent exponent of the European miniature, acquired his first lessons on painting in the Pauline monastery in Crikvenica. When deciding on which ingredients to allow in the new Pauline cake, a rule was established that all ingredients must have been available in the Pauline era. The list of ingredients includes olive oil, almonds, walnuts, figs, raisins, honey, cinnamon, rosemary, lavender and laurel. Competitors will have absolute freedom with regard to the shape, size, appearance and recipe of their Pauline cake, and will also be allowed to use certain other ingredients in addition to those mentioned above, and to determine their amounts. The selection of the best Pauline cake will take place on Trg Stjepana Radića Square in Crikvenica on Saturday 21 April 2012. The new Pauline cake will become an original gastronomic souvenir of Crikvenica that tells the story of the area's rich cultural and historical heritage in the best possible way.
