The Crikvenica folk costume

Like other traditional costumes from the area, the Crikvenica folk costume is an Adriatic type of costume. The collection of data on the original Crikvenica folk costume started in 1995 for the needs of the "Vatroslav Lisinski" Folklore Society. Since then, seven original costumes between 100 and 150 years old have been found. The women's costume is traditionally more richly decorated than the men's one. Women used to wear a large white blouse made of fine linen (the so-called stomanja nabranica), a wide black skirt with shoulder straps, and a colourful woven belt around the waist. On holidays and special occasions, the skirt was embroidered with a red or blue ribbon. Jewellery included red collars around the neck or the traditional Morčići earrings. Women usually wore a wrapped white scarf around their head embroidered with red thread, and also traditional footwear, known locally as opanci. Men used to wear white trousers, usually with black embroidery around the pockets, a white shirt (the stomanja nabranica) and black vest. In 2012, a book dedicated to the folk costumes and traditions of Crikvenica will be published to mark the 600th anniversary of the town.
